What is Physical Literacy?

Physical literacy is the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes to perform fundamental movements in various activities. These skills include running, hopping, throwing, catching, and jumping.

At Baseline Basketball, physical literacy is an important aspect of our curriculum because it sets our players up for more success in basketball, future sports and activities, as well as in life and other opportunities they choose to pursue.

The four pillars of physical literacy are:

  • Motivation

  • Confidence

  • Physical Competence

  • Knowledge and Understanding

Physical literacy is a lifelong commitment to achieve an active and healthy lifestyle. It is important for children to start early to gain confidence and learn the skills needed for activities. This will also reduce the amount of frustration and chance for sport withdrawal.

Physical literacy opens the door to a variety of different physical activities and possibilities in a person’s life time. These opportunities can provide benefits such as physical and emotional wellbeing, cognitive ability, and good health.
